12/3/2009 - Kentucky's Bunning blocks reappointment of Bernanke
Bunning, who has railed against Bernanke's performance during the nation's financial crisis, became the second Senator to put a "hold" on Bernanke¡¯s confirmation for a second term. The procedural move by Bunning and Sen. Bernard Sanders, a Vermont independent, could require a Air Jordan 5 super-majority of 60 votes in the 100-member Senate to achieve Bernanke's confirmation. "I will do everything I can to stop your nomination and drag out the process as long as possible," Bunning said during Bernanke's confirmation hearing on Thursday. "We must put an end to your and the Fed¡¯s failures, and there is no better time than now." Bernanke faced tough questions from members of the Senate Banking Committee, which must decide whether he gets another four-year term as the chairman of the independent central bank. Bernanke defended unpopular actions he¡¯s taken that helped stem a spreading global financial crisis, and he offered a mea culpa for the Fed¡¯s failure to see the storm coming. The harshest criticism came from Bunning, who voted against Bernanke for his first term on the grounds that his policies were indistinguishable from those of his predecessor, Alan Greenspan. "You have decided that just about every large bank, investment bank, insurance company, and even some industrial companies are too big to fail. Rather than making management, shareholders, and debt holders feel the consequences of their risk-taking, you bailed them out," Bunning said. "In short, you Air Jordan Shoes are the definition of moral hazard." In an opening statement, Bernanke said that the financial crisis would've been "markedly worse" but for the actions of the Fed and the $700 billion taxpayer bailout of the financial sector that Congress passed last fall. Under questioning later, he acknowledged that the Fed was slow to recognize the threat that problems in mortgage finance presented to the broader financial system. Bernanke said that the Fed had failed to monitor sufficiently the risks that large financial firms were taking, a failure that had grave consequences for average Americans, who now are struggling with an unemployment rate that¡¯s at 10.2 percent and probably heading higher. A Republican, Bernanke was first nominated by President George W. Bush in October 2005 and confirmed in January 2006. Today it's the Republican Party that¡¯s most hostile to President Barack Obama's nominee for a second term. Democrats largely rallied behind Bernanke, a quiet bearded man whose career before the Fed was as a Princeton University professor Air Yeezy widely recognized as the world¡¯s leading expert on the Great Depression. 12/2/2009 - Minarets and Europe's crisis
The vote revealed that Switzerland, like a number of other Western nations, faces a deep identity crisis which has nothing to do with Islam, sharia, immigration or any other red-rags that were waived by the far-right to increase European fears of Muslims. This becomes even more of a crisis when one recalls that among the crucial outcomes of the struggle Air Jordan Shoes between church and state throughout Europe was the emergence of these values as an 'alternative' to church dictate and the preaching of clerics. Hence, the first serious problem with the referendum process is how a democratic society can begin to contemplate holding a popular vote on a matter that is regarded integral to the core themes of freedom and rights. While it is only fair to assert that the Swiss government and most newspaper editors had urged voters to defeat the ban, it remains the case that the vote should not have been held in the first place. The very concept of a referendum in which the vast majority are asked to vote on a topic specific to the culture or religion of a minority group is in itself extremely problematic. Imagine the furor that would certainly ensue should a country with an overwhelmingly Muslim population be asked to vote on whether its small Christian community should be allowed to build their churches according to a particular design or method, or whether they would rather do without the church bells sounding from time to time. The referendum becomes even more ludicrous when one discovers that there were precisely two applications for building permits which included the construction of minarets, and neither likely to be Air Jordan 6 built within the next five years. Therefore, since it was unlikely that the Swiss people were soon going to wake up to find themselves surrounded by a forest of minarets, this whole process begs the question of what the real motives were behind the referendum. By singling them out as suspects and potential enemies within, European societies are creating wide-spread instability and future uncertainty for everyone on the social, economic and political levels. For a Europe that still commemorates the tragedies that occurred when it played host to a concerted attack on one of its own communities nearly 70 years ago, it is a serious over-sight and a case of horrific negligence to allow the same to happen again, only against a different victim. 12/1/2009 - Make no mistake: FSU just fired a legend without explaining why
Make no mistake, Bowden got fired. He wanted to coach Florida State in 2010. He said as much in a teleconference Sunday night. "Right now, I would like to come back," Bowden said then. "I've got bosses. I've got people who have Air Jordan 3 to approve it." That option was not presented to Bowden in a meeting with Wetherell and Spetman on Monday. If you have Job A, and you'd like to continue doing Job A, and your boss offers you a choice of Job B or nothing, you've been fired from Job A. Wetherell didn't make the wrong decision. The program had slid too far under Bowden, who kept trying unsuccessfully to raise it back to the heights he reached from 1987-2000, when the Seminoles finished every season ranked in the top five. Wetherell, a former Florida State player and Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, had little choice once prominent boosters began calling for Bowden's resignation. Wetherell, who has been FSU's president since 2003, will step down soon himself. The presidential search committee met Tuesday, as a matter of fact. It's too bad few will remember anything Wetherell did on the academic side. For eternity, he'll be the president who fired Bobby Bowden and then refused to explain himself. Bowden opted not to take questions Tuesday, instead sitting down for a brief interview with a sports information official. To his credit, associate athletic director asked Air Jordan 4 Bowden the questions we would have asked, and Bowden answered them. Even if he hadn't, it would have been fine. Bowden has filled enough notebooks to last 10 lifetimes, and he's earned the right to leave quietly. He's the one who got forced out. Besides, he'll have more chances to talk before the Seminoles' bowl game. What did Florida State officials do? They sent Ponder and Watson. The two players handled the situation flawlessly. Their coach would have been proud. But they seemed a little shocked when a reporter asked how they felt being the only spokesmen for the program. "It's weird," Ponder said. To dismiss a coach with 388 career wins without so much as a syllable of public explanation simply defies logic. We joke often in stories that if a coach pulls off some improbable feat, his university will build a statue of him. Florida State built a statue of Bobby Bowden in 2004. Five years later, Florida State fired Bobby Air Jordan 6 Bowden, and Wetherell never said a word. 11/29/2009 - Shoppers spent less over Black Friday weekend
SAN FRANCISCO/CHICAGO (Reuters) - Consumers spent significantly less per person at the start of the holiday season this weekend, dimming hopes for a retail comeback that would help propel the economy early in 2010. The lackluster spending could pressure retail stocks on Monday as some investors were looking for a stronger showing compared with a year Air Jordan 20 earlier, when consumers were being hammered by the recession and credit crunch. "There may be a bit of a pullback, a little disappointment," said Patricia Edwards, chief investment officer at Storehouse Partners. While shoppers turned out in force as early as U.S. Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, many said they had zeroed in on highly discounted items, would buy only what they needed and would walk out of a store if they did not find a good deal. "Shoppers proved this weekend that they were willing to open their wallets for a bargain," said National Retail Federation Chief Executive Tracy Mullin in a statement on Sunday. Retail chains "know they have their work cut out for them to keep people coming back through Christmas." Store chains that may have done better than their peers include discount retailers like Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp, teen apparel retailers Aeropostale Inc and American Eagle Outfitters and higher-end chains like Saks Inc, analysts said. A clearer picture of retail performance will be seen when many U.S. retailers report November sales on Thursday. Consumers said they will have spent nearly 8 percent less on average, or about $343 per person, over the weekend that includes Thanksgiving, Black Friday and runs through Sunday, according to the NRF. Traffic to stores and websites rose to 195 million people from 172 million in 2008, but shoppers were focused on buying low-priced items, like $10 toys and $9 books, the NRF said. Total spending for the holiday weekend rose to an estimated $41.2 billion, up 0.5 percent from a year earlier, NRF said. For a graphic on U.S. holiday Air Jordan 21 sales trends, click here Consumer spending makes up roughly 70 percent of the U.S. economy and will help determine how quickly the country can recover from a recession that began in December 2007, said Torsten Slok, an economist at Deutsche Bank. "The good news this weekend is that consumers are no longer hibernating like they were a year ago, and that in itself is important for the economy," Slok said, referring to the higher traffic. The NRF has forecast a 1 percent decline in holiday sales this year, which would mark an unprecedented drop for two straight years after a global financial crisis erupted in 2008. 11/26/2009 - Is your date a 'stud or dud?' Ask your phone
If that dreamy blind date seems too good to be true, or the guy at the bar with a martini and a pencil-thin moustache looks a little sketchy, the truth about them -- or at least some of it -- could be found on your phone. Designers at a pair of companies say their new applications for smartphones can tell you in real time whether someone is married or divorced, has Wholesale UGG 5815 Classic Tall a criminal record, has filed for bankruptcy or has any number of potential red flags in their past. Using Google to search for information on a prospective romantic partner is standard practice for many single people in the digital age. But these new apps, combined with the growth of smartphones and wireless networks, now allow for quick background checks on the go, potentially before a date is even over. The lighthearted iPhone apps Stud or Dud? and Are They Really Single? -- from online information broker PeopleFinders -- have far-reaching potential for convenient snooping, and not just on potential dates. Their makers say that in today's society it's increasingly important to check out people's backstories. "There are more and more strangers in people's lives," said Bryce Lane, president of the PeopleFinders Network. "There's this digital awakening where people are in online communities -- they're meeting people they don't have information on. "We think that's a problem. Yes, there are a lot of opportunities to meet great new people, but a lot of people are misrepresenting who they are." Meanwhile, another data company, Intelius, Wholesale 5202 Baby Infant Erin Boots 0-24 Month,Pink is offering a similar app called for the Android and BlackBerry, with other platforms in the works. Marketed with the slogan, "Look up before you hook up," the application has such features as a Sleaze Detector, which checks for criminal offenses, and $$$, which uses property ownership records to gauge someone's financial assets. DateCheck offers some less-serious information, too. Its Interests feature trolls for information on educational background, social networking activities and professional history while Compatibility compares the subject's horoscope and astrological sign with the user's. With the user punches in as much information as they have on their subject. Results can range from past addresses, real estate ownership and business and professional licenses to bankruptcies, evictions, criminal records and what the company calls "possible relationships." Accurate searches also require a date of birth, which may be tricky to extract tactfully from someone on a first or second date. Lane said all information comes from public records that are available to anyone. But PeopleFinders, which has been collecting data for more than 20 Wholesale UGG 5245 Ultra Tall Boots years from sources all over the United States, pulls it all together into one database. "We're hoping they're fun apps and they're helping you learn about the people that you come into contact with," Lane said. "They're easy to use and we're pretty hopeful that they're going to be popular."

France progressed after a 1-1 draw with Ireland gave the 2006 finalists a 2-1 aggregate victory but they needed Gallas's close-range goal -- after a blatant Thierry Henry handball in the build-up -- to win the tie. They go through to next year's extravaganza in South Africa along with Slovenia, Greece, Portugal and Algeria, who beat arch rivals Egypt 1-0 in neutral Sudan to win a tense sudden-death playoff to secure the final African qualifying berth. The 32nd and last finalist will be decided early on Thursday morning when Uruguay meet Costa Rica in the second leg of the South American/CONCACAF playoff in Montevideo. Uruguay UGG 5325 Sundance Boots won the first leg 1-0 at the weekend. That was enough to give Slovenia the tie on the away goals rule as they reached the World Cup finals for the second time since joining FIFA as an independent nation in 1992. Russia finished with nine men after substitute Alexander Kerzhakov and Yuri Zhirkov were sent off. The defeat also denied Russia's Dutch coach Guus Hiddink a fourth appearance in the finals after coaching his native Netherlands in the 1998 World Cup, South Korea in 2002 and Australia in 2006. Greece, held to a 0-0 draw by Ukraine in Athens on Saturday, went to Donetsk as underdogs, but stunned the home team by winning with a first-half goal from Dimitris Salpigidis. Striker Giorgos Samaras supplied the pass in the 32nd minute for Salpigidis who sent Greece to the World Cup for only the second time after their debut appearance in the U.S. in 1994. Greece coach Otto Rehhagel thanked the gods after their victory, telling reporters: "Our boys were rewarded today for an unbelievable passion and fighting spirit. Rehhagel, who took charge of Greece in 2001, has now steered the 2004 European champions to one World Cup and two European championships in his eight years at the helm and will be involved in the World Cup for the first time in his 50-year soccer career.

11/17/2009 - Coghlan, Bailey honored with rookie awards
Players from the National League East division swept the top three spots in voting for the NL Rookie of the Year, as Florida Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan won the award in a narrow race over Philadelphia Phillies left-hander J.A. Happ, with Atlanta Braves right-hander Tommy Hanson finishing third. In the American League, Oakland Athletics closer Andrew Bailey won the award, with Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus finishing second and Detroit Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello third. Coghlan, 24, became the third Marlins Ugg Classic rookie honored with the award this decade, joining Dontrelle Willis (2003) and Hanley Ramirez (2006). Called up from Class AAA in early May, Coghlan led all NL rookies this year in batting average (.321), runs (84), hits (162) and on-base percentage (.390). After batting just .240 before the all-star break, he led all NL players in batting average (.372), runs (54) and hits (113) in the second half. Coghlan received 17 of a possible 32 first-place votes in balloting by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, seven more than Happ received. But Coghlan was also left off seven ballots entirely, while Happ -- who went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA for the NL champion Phillies -- was the only player named on all 32. Coghlan, whose father, Tim, died in a car accident when Coghlan was 15, said during a conference call Monday, "I know my Dad is watching from heaven with a smile on his face, and it makes me smile inside Ugg Cardy and outside. He's the one who instilled work ethic in me and taught me the game. I know he's proud." "Going into this season, in my first big league spring training camp, my goal was just to make an impression on the organization and the big league coaching staff," Bailey said in a conference call. "Once I made the team, my goal was just to stay [in the big leagues]." http://www.onsugar.com/

11/12/2009 - Continuously Sneezing Girl Enthralls Nation
Lauren Johnson, a 12-year-old girl who says she sneezes up to 12,000 times every day, has taken her story to the national news media for help. On recovering — or not quite recovering — from a recent cold, she found herself sneezing almost continuously. After doctors came up clueless, Snyderman broke it down: the girl's not brand clothing actually sneezing, but probably instead experiencing some kind of involuntary tick. "I just don't think this is a sneeze," Snyderman said on the Today Show. "A classic sneeze — you sneeze, your eyes close and you have some spray out of your nose." Lauren, she said, is "sneezing" from her mouth. In a follow-up report, NBC reported that doctors are now saying Lauren might have irretractable psychogenic disorder, a rare psychological condition triggered by stress. No one, UGG Boots apparently, knows how to treat it. The story has swept around the Internet, picked up by various major networks. Why is the nation so enthralled by a little girl who can't stop sneezing? Is it the same reason we can't help but look at Charla Nash, the woman disfigured by a chimpanzee attack, who revealed her face to the public on Wednesday's episode of Oprah? We're rapt by the strange and unusual, and thrillingly terrified of the implications: we live in an unpredictable universe, where anything can happen. As proof of that, it's unlikely Lauren could have guessed she would meet celebrities such as Jon Bon Jovi and Andre Wholesale UGG Boots Agassi, who were guests on the Today Show the day she was diagnosed by Dr. Snyderman.

11/10/2009 - Mallahan concedes Seattle mayor's race to McGinn
Joe Mallahan conceded the Seattle mayor's race a few minutes ago to
Mike McGinn, after the latest vote count showed McGinn's lead growing to 4,939
votes.
Mallahan spoke briefly at a subdued news conference in his
campaign's Eastlake
office.
"I just have to say the voters of Seattle responded to Mike McGinn's
message," he said. "I have Ugg
Sundance Limited Edition 30th Anniversary to congratulate Mike for
that. ... I learned a lot from Mike. All I can say is, he beat me. He appeared
to be the super-campaigner this time around."
McGinn spoke to supporters at his Southeast
Seattle campaign headquarters and, amid cheers of "We like
Mike," gave his take on why their effort succeeded.
"We went out and we spoke to people." he said.
"We went out and we listened to people."
At one point last week, only about 500 votes separated the
two candidates, but late returns have favored McGinn. By the last count Friday,
McGinn led by 2,384. He more than doubled that lead in Monday's count.
Attorney and nonprofit founder McGinn spent far less than
Mallahan in the race.
His campaign relied on more than 300 volunteers. Lacking
money for many traditional ads and mailers, McGinn, a former Sierra Club
leader, got his name out by holding town-hall meetings and making himself
available to the media, while his volunteers contacted thousands of voters
individually.
Mallahan, a T-Mobile vice president, was unknown in local
political circles before he decided to run for mayor. During the primary, he
wrote his campaign a $200,000 Ugg
Mini check so he would be on equal financial footing with the
incumbent, Mayor Greg Nickels.
He raised half a million dollars beyond that.
In the general-election campaign, Mallahan gained
endorsements from the local police and firefighters, most of the labor and
business communities, Gov. Chris Gregoire and the head of the Washington State
Democrats.
City Council President Richard Conlin sent out a news
release Monday congratulating McGinn on his win.
"Michael has a great track record of working for the
people of Seattle,"
he wrote. "I'm very optimistic about the partnership we have the
opportunity to create between the Council and the incoming Mayor."

11/3/2009 - 100 Things Restaurant Staffers Should Never Do (Part 1)
Herewith is a modest list of dos and don¡¯ts for servers at
the seafood restaurant I am building. Veteran waiters, moonlighting actresses,
libertarians and baristas will no doubt protest some or most of what follows.
They will claim it homogenizes them or stifles their true nature. And yet, if
100 different actors play Hamlet, hitting all the same marks, reciting all the
same lines Ugg
Roxy cannot each one bring something unique to that role?
1. Do not let anyone enter the restaurant without a warm
greeting.
2. Do not make a singleton feel bad. Do not say, ¡°Are you
waiting for someone?¡± Ask for a reservation. Ask if he or she would like to sit
at the bar.
3. Never refuse to seat three guests because a fourth has
not yet arrived.
4. If a table is not ready within a reasonable length of
time, offer a free drink and/or amuse-bouche. The guests may be tired and
hungry and thirsty, and they did everything right.
5. Tables should be level without anyone asking. Fix it
before guests are seated.
6. Do not lead the witness with, ¡°Bottled water or just
tap?¡± Both are fine. Remain neutral.
7. Do not announce your name. No jokes, no flirting, no
cuteness.
8. Do not interrupt a conversation. For any reason.
Especially not to recite specials. Wait for the right moment.
9. Do not recite the specials too fast or robotically or
dramatically. It is not a soliloquy. This is not an audition.
10. Do not inject your personal favorites when explaining
the specials.
11. Do not hustle the lobsters. That is, do not say, ¡°We
only have two lobsters left.¡± Even if there Ugg
Nightfall are only two lobsters left.
12. Do not touch the rim of a water glass. Or any other
glass.
13. Handle wine glasses by their stems and silverware by
the handles.
14. When you ask, ¡°How¡¯s everything?¡± or ¡°How was the
meal?¡± listen to the answer and fix whatever is not right.
15. Never say ¡°I don¡¯t know¡± to any question without
following with, ¡°I¡¯ll find out.¡±
16. If someone requests more sauce or gravy or cheese,
bring a side dish of same. No pouring. Let them help themselves.
17. Do not take an empty plate from one guest while others
are still eating the same course. Wait, wait, wait.
18. Know before approaching a table who has ordered what.
Do not ask, ¡°Who¡¯s having the shrimp?¡±
19. Offer guests butter and/or olive oil with their bread.
20. Never refuse to substitute one vegetable for another.
21. Never serve anything that looks creepy or runny or
wrong.
22. If someone is unsure about a wine choice, help him.
That might mean sending someone else to the table or offering a taste or two.
23. If someone likes a wine, steam the label off the bottle
and give it to the guest with the bill. It has the year, the vintner, the
importer, etc.
24. Never use the same glass for a second drink.
25. Make sure the glasses are clean. Inspect them before
placing them on the table.
26. Never assume people want their white wine in an ice
bucket. Inquire.
27. For red wine, ask if the guests want to pour their own
or prefer the waiter to pour.
28. Do not put your hands all over the spout of a wine
bottle while removing the cork.
29. Do not pop a champagne cork. Remove it quietly,
gracefully. The less noise the better.
30. Never let the wine Ugg
Classic bottle touch the glass
into which you are pouring. No one wants to drink the dust or dirt from the
bottle.
31. Never remove a plate full of food without asking what
went wrong. Obviously, something went wrong.
32. Never touch a customer. No excuses. Do not do it. Do
not brush them, move them, wipe them or dust them.
33. Do not bang into chairs or tables when passing by.
34. Do not have a personal conversation with another server
within earshot of customers.
35. Do not eat or drink in plain view of guests.
36. Never reek from perfume or cigarettes. People want to
smell the food and beverage.
37. Do not drink alcohol on the job, even if invited by the
guests. ¡°Not when I¡¯m on duty¡± will suffice.
38.Do not call a guy a ¡°dude.¡±
39. Do not call a woman ¡°lady.¡±
40. Never say, ¡°Good choice,¡± implying that other choices
are bad.
41. Saying, ¡°No problem¡± is a problem. It has a tone of
insincerity or sarcasm. ¡°My pleasure¡± or ¡°You¡¯re welcome¡± will
do.
42. Do not compliment a guest¡¯s attire or hairdo or makeup.
You are insulting someone else.
43. Never mention what your favorite dessert is. It¡¯s

45. Do not curse, no matter how young or hip the guests.
46. Never acknowledge any one guest over and above any
other. All guests are equal.
47. Do not gossip Ugg

48. Do not ask what someone is eating or drinking when they
ask for more; remember or consult the order.
49. Never mention the tip, unless asked.
50. Do not turn on the charm when it¡¯s tip time. Be
consistent throughout.
Next week: 51-100.

11/2/2009 - Great White nearly bit in half by an even BIGGER monster: Swimmers stay out of the water after warning over giant 20ft shark
A
'monster' great white shark measuring up to 20 ft long is on the prowl off a
popular Queensland
beach, according to officials.
Swimmers
were warned to stay out of the water off Stradbroke
Island after the shark mauled Air Jordan
23 another smaller great white
which had been hooked on a baited drum line.
The
10-foot great white was almost bitten in half.
The
fictional shark at the centre of the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Jaws was
estimated to be just five feet longer.
'It
certainly opened up my eyes. I mean the shark that was caught is a substantial
shark in itself,' says Jeff Krause of Queensland Fisheries.
The
great white, the most dangerous creature in the sea, was still alive when
hauled onto a boat near Deadman's Beach off north Stradbroke island.
News
of the shocking attack on the smaller shark has sent jitters along the Queensland
coast from Stradbroke Island, near Brisbane, to the Sunshine Coast further
north down to the tourist mecca of Surfers Paradise,
Air Jordan 20 south of Brisbane.
'Whatever
attacked and took chunks out of this big shark must be massive,' said
19-year-old surfer Ashton Smith. 'I've heard about the big one that's lurking
out there somewhere.
'We're
all being very, very cautious.'
Mr
John Gooding, who operates a charter fishing boat, said sharks were everywhere,
although there appeared to be no specific reason for an increase in the number.
'Some
days you struggle to get a fish on to the boat before the sharks take them,' he
told the Courier Mail Michael Jordan Shoes newspaper. http://teenblog.org/dongdong/
