9/24/2009 - European Union to develop batteries and battery manufacturer's registration requirements
EU's "Official Gazette" on August 8, 2009 published in the European Commission 2009/603/EC resolution to develop batteries and battery manufacturer's registration requirements.

The nonprofit Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. (RBRC) has announced its collection data for the first six months of 2005, reporting that a total of 2.25 million pounds of rechargeable batteries was collected in the United States and Canada through the Call2Recycle program. This data represents an increase of 9% from the same time period in 2004.
Call2 Recycle is a comprehensive rechargeable battery and cell phone recycling program featuring more than 30,000 collection locations across the nation where consumers can drop off used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones. Through RBRC¡¯s recycling network, reusable metals from Ni-Cd, Li-ion, Ni-MH and Small Sealed Lead (Pb) batteries are recovered and recycled to make new products, such as new dell laptop battery and stainless steel. Cell phones collected through the Call2Recycle program are recycled or refurbished and resold, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting national charities, such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
According to a recent study conducted by NOP World on behalf of RBRC, Americans use an average of six wireless products per day, and more than 30% of consumers own and use eight or more wireless products. Battery capacity is commonly measured by applying a full discharge. While this method provides accurate readings, it is cumbersome, time consuming and wears the battery down unnecessarily. During the last 15 years, several rapid-test methods have emerged that eliminate the need for discharge, so the manufacturers claim. Introduced in 1992, AC conductance became popular in measuring conductance, from which CCA is estimated. This non-invasive method was hailed as a major breakthrough because the test only takes a few seconds and the instrument stays cool. Unfortunately, AC conductance is unable to read capacity and is of limited use for deep cycle batteries.

During the last five years, critical progress has been made towards capacity estimations. In this section we evaluate the strengths and limitations of various battery chemistries, beginning with the nickel. Each battery system offers unique advantages but none provides a fully satisfactory solution. With the increased selection of battery chemistries available today, better choices can be made to address specific battery needs. A careful evaluation of each battery's attribute is important. Because of similarities, both nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride are covered in this paper.
The nickel-cadmium battery
Swedish Waldmar Jungner invented the nickel-cadmium dell 8n544 battery in 1899. At that time, the materials were expensive compared to other battery types available and its use was limited to special applications. In 1932, the active materials were deposited inside a porous nickel-plated electrode and in 1947 research began on a sealed nickel-cadmium battery.

Battery novices often brag about miracle batteries that offer very high energy densities, deliver 1000 charge/discharge cycles and are paper-thin. These attributes are indeed achievable but not on one and the same battery pack.
A certain battery may be designed for small size and long runtime but has a limited cycle life. Another pack may be built for durability and is big and bulky. A third may have high energy density and long durability but is made for a special application and is too expensive for the average consumer. A lithium-based compaq laptop battery can be designed for maximum energy density but its safety would be compromised.
Battery manufacturers are aware of customer needs and offer packs that best suit the application. The mobile phone industry is a good example of this clever adaptation. Here, small size and high energy density reign in favor of longevity. Short service life is not an issue because a device is often replaced before the armada m700 battery is worn out.
Below is a summary of the strength and limitations of today's popular battery systems. I have a background in radio communications and studied the behavior of rechargeable batteries in practical, everyday applications for several decades. In desiring to share this battery knowledge with you; I wrote several articles addressing the strength and limitations of the battery. These articles have been published in various trade magazines in the USA, Canada and Europe. I later compiled the material and wrote my first book entitled Batteries in a Portable World - A Handbook on Rechargeable Batteries for Non-Engineers.
The 88-page first edition appeared in 1997 and covered such topics as the memory effect of nickel-cadmium batteries and how to restore them. Some readers commented that I favored nickel-cadmium over nickel-metal-hydride. Perhaps this observation is valid and I have taken note. GM had considered A123, a startup with no large-scale experience manufacturing automotive a1148, in part because A123 had developed a novel battery chemistry that produced very powerful, safe, and long-lasting batteries. So, why didn't the company get the contract?
First, some background on why A123 was in the running in the first place. A123 replaced the cobalt-oxide-based electrodes of conventional lithium-ion apple powerbook g4 15inch battery with new nanostructured iron-phosphate electrodes. These phosphates are inherently safer than the cobalt-oxide-based chemistries, which have been known to suddenly burst into flames, destroying laptops and cell phones in the process and leading to massive recalls. The conventional cobalt materials also don't last very long--that's why laptop batteries have to be replaced every couple of years.
The capacity of A123's apple macbook pro 15 battery , in contrast, doesn't fade much with use. Safe, long-lasting batteries are essential in cars, where they're expected to survive abusive conditions for a decade or more. Ultimately, cost is the biggest issue, and A123 has advantages in this area as well. Safer materials ultimately reduce costs by decreasing the need for redundant safety systems (such as those used in the Tesla Roadster). What's more, longer-lasting materials reduce the need to oversize the batteries to make up for fading capacity over their lifetime--something else that reduces costs. Finally, by replacing cobalt with iron, A123 also reduced the cost of materials.
LG Chem uses a manganese-oxide-based electrode, which is less inherently safe than A123's phosphate-based materials. The company uses other modifications to the cells, including a novel separator between the positive and negative electrodes,apple a1175 battery,apple ibook g4 14-inch battery,apple ibook g4 12-inch battery to make up for this.
